One of the most popular procedures in plastic surgery is breast augmentation (or mammoplasty). Whether it’’s to enhance the size or shape of the breasts, breast augmentation can make a world of difference in the way you look and feel.

Breast augmentation can be performed to add size or proportion to a woman’’s shape. For this procedure, implants filled with saline or silicone gel are placed in the breasts through a variety of ways. Incisions are made under the arms, breasts, or around the nipples.

Women with very large breasts often experience back, neck and shoulder pain. For them, breast reduction (or reduction mammoplasty) surgery may be necessary. This procedure involves the removal of fat, glandular tissue and excess skin from the breasts, leaving them firmer, smaller, lighter and less pendulous. For a woman who feels her breast size is too small, too large or not contoured enough, cosmetic breast surgery can be the answer.

Along with breasts many women (and men) are concerned with their bodies. Liposuction (or suction-assisted lipectomy) has become one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures performed today. Proven to be safe with minimal scarring and outstanding results, liposuction is the preferred method for removing fat from the, thighs, buttocks and midriff, as well as areas of the face, neck and arms. Liposuction is not an alternative to weight reduction, but can be very effective in removing fat from areas that do not respond to diet and exercise programs.

Suction-assisted lipectomy is performed by a doctor on an outpatient basis. A narrow tube (cannula) is inserted through a small incision. The doctor then manipulates the cannula, which is connected to a strong vacuum, breaking up fatty areas and suctioning out the fat.

Unlike liposuction, which targets the fat, a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is performed primarily for the removal of skin looseness due to pregnancy or weight loss. An incision is made within the “panty line” of the lower abdomen and from this incision the abdominal skin is lifted away from the muscular abdominal wall beneath. The redundant skin is pulled downwards and the excess skin is trimmed away. The procedure is done mainly under a general anesthetic on either an outpatient or inpatient basis. Also, both surgeries can be performed on men and women.

Board certified plastic surgeons offer breast augmentation (or augmentation mammoplasty) with saline and silicone breast implants, breast lift (or mastopexy), breast reduction (or reduction mammoplasty), tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty), and liposuction for patients.
