Choosing Appropriate Funeral Flowers

Although many people typically associate flowers with life and beauty, they”re also often used at solemn and somber occasions as a means of conveying grief, as well as providing a tribute. This is exactly the case with funeral flowers, which can act as a symbol of condolence and sympathy for a lost loved one, or for the surviving immediate family, close relatives, or friends of the deceased. In these instances, it’’s extremely important to choose both the appropriate flowers and an appropriate arrangement in order to convey the proper sentiments.

Funeral flowers are typically chosen by and placed up the top of the coffin by family and close friends, and are usually arranged in a diamond shaped display or in the traditional shape of a cross, though the size of the arrangement will depend upon the size of the casket. Floral sprays are traditionally made from white lilies, gladiolas, or snap dragons with a prominent green foliage, while crosses are typically made from chrysanthemums, lisianthus, or roses, larger, more dramatic flowers which are either used on their own or arranged with other smaller seasonal flowers. Sprays and crosses are typically given by immediate family, and can be made in varying lengths and sizes in order to match the size of the casket.

The popular choice among close relatives and friends is usually a smaller floral arrangement in a heart-shaped, circular, or square design which can be placed either on or alongside the casket. These displays are typically made from the same flowers used for the crosses - namely chrysanthemums, lisianthus, or roses - and are framed by smaller complementary flowers or green foliage similarly to floral sprays. However, these smaller sprays are not limited to the typical designs; many florists will also work to create special tribute arrangements, such as angels or any other object or form which had special meaning to the deceased. Whatever the case, the flowers used are typically subtle in color, either white or a pastel shade, although shades of crimson and red can also be tasteful choices.

Lastly, wreaths are always an excellent choice for family and friends alike; their classic circular arrangement is widely identified with the notion of everlasting life and the continual, unconditional love of the surviving loved ones of the deceased. These can also be placed on or around the casket, and are usually composed of smaller seasonal flowers, although contemporary, non-traditional designs are becoming more commonplace. Either way, the inclusion of white Calla lilies in the wreath is always an appropriate choice in order to achieve a modern look with the wreath.

However, regardless of the design or floral arrangement, the important thing to remember is that funeral flowers are intended to convey grief, mourning, and sympathy for the deceased and his or her surviving family and relatives, and choosing appropriate flowers which do so should be the greatest concern.
